When a Date Is Not a Date

Dear Short Answers:
My boss asked me to have a drink with him next week to celebrate the holidays. I said “yes” because I thought it was a group affair. I just found out that it is just me and that he probably thinks it’s more like a date. I am totally not interested in dating him but I don’t know what to do. How do I explain in advance that this is NOT a date? I don’t want to jeopardize my job but I also don’t want an uncomfortable “date.”

Dear JAM:
It is quite possible that your boss wants to acknowledge the season in a collegial manner and does NOT think of it as a date.  Say nothing, assume it is just a nice gesture, have one drink, and be sure you have dinner plans “with a friend”  elsewhere.
