Many Are Called, Few Are Chosen

Dear Short Answers:
My son, who is 18 years old, very athletic and very handsome, has decided that he wants to move to NYC to become a model.  I have tried to reason with him and explain that college is more important but he believes that if he waits for four years, he may be too late to “capitalize” on his looks.  How do I convince him that being a male model is not a wise career choice?

Dear FKB:
Make it very clear that you will not financially support or subsidize his modeling choice. And stick to it. There are lots of pretty faces (and bodies) in the big city, and he will learn very quickly if he likes “the life” and if he is willing to do the very hard work required. He may get lucky or he may come home ready to consider other options. Let this happen and be there if and when he returns.
